I feel like such a curmudgeon as I write this, but I can't help how I feel. Make no mistake. I think Ms. Bernard is a talented writer who created a story in three parts unnecessarily, but that was original, interesting and reasonably well plotted. My complaint lay in what I believe to be unnecessary serialization.The total length of the three books combined is 542 pages. I figure that title pages, author's notes and previews for the next book down to around 500 pages. That is a very decent length book. So, why break it up into three books? Of course my immediate supposition is to simply sell more books. I understand that this my be Ms. Bernard's sole occupation, but I feel is a bush league, amateurish move that didn't enhance the story and certainly didn't sit well with me.As for the ending of the Black Rose Trilogy, I didn't feel that it lived up to the build up and, as a consequence, I'm left with a sense of having been let down.

I can not recall a trilogy where all three segments were wonderful, but The Black Rose was just that. The first two were my favorites, in part because I could savor the fact that there was one more book to be had. If I had to find one thing to remark about it would be that there was a lot of sex in this segment. I read historical novels more for love and romance than sex. However even the sexy scenes were well written.
This trilogy was very well written and entertaining. Bernard does a fantastic job relaying each character and their individual personality. The Black Rose trilogy includes everything from mystery to romanticism to female empowerment. The story and character of Raven Wells is very inspiring and stimulating, leaving the reader with continuous thoughts of the character and luring them back for more of the experiences of Raven (Serena). A hard book to put down!
I would recommend this trilogy (because you can't just read one book) to anyone who enjoys a good story full of anticipation, drama, mystery and heated romance.

I liked the first 2 books in the series, this last one I had to force my way through. Serena doesn't grow from the experience, I wanted her to pick love over revenge, but instead she gets both. I also dislike books where the female is desired by everyone, it's very hard to relate. Half the time in the book I wanted someone bad to happen to her just to throw a wrench in her plans.
I held off on reviewing this series of books until I felt I could put into words my thoughts. My advice is to start at the beginning. Not one of these will disappoint. I also wanted to see if the author could do what I could not (because of health reasons) and pull an eloquent idea from conception to completion and hopefully beyond. Because there is room for more. I can't say bravo enough. Such plotlines, such characters, such an flawless series of stories that it takes my breath away. There are no spoilers just inadequate praise. Thank you to the author for hours a true entertainment.
I have read the entire Black Rose Trilogoy having just now finished Lady Triumphs. I enjoyed the first two books but felt there was too much sex and not enough story development for my tastes. But Lady Triumps had the perfect balance of all elements. I was enthralled with Raven Wells from the beginning to the end. I wish I had her strength, courage, elegance and mind. She makes an unusual role model for women, or does she? I highly recommend this easy-reading trilogy to be read in the heat of summer at the beach!
The trilogy of LADY FALLS, LADY RISES and LADY TRIUMPHS is one of the Best trilogies I've read in many years. What I liked best of were her choices. When she walked down the road at the end of the Lady Falls I was very afraid she would become .... Warped/Twisted for lack of better words. The direction she went outlined in Lady Rises was strong and held a noble goal even though it still could have made her cold and brittle. The final choices in Lady Triumphs had me weak with relief. This trilogy was so very well plotted, secondary characters were well developed and has me hoping a spin off book might be in the future. The best part is the lesson that the choices you make will define you, horrid/tragic events in your life do not have to destroy you. An excellent trilogy that I am sure will be reread many times in the years to come!
I read the first Black Rose book, and was impatiently hooked to read more! It intrigues from the first page of book one, to the last page of book three. AND leaves the reader immediately longing for more, even after the tale has reached it's triumphant conclusion.
The story was gripping from the first and the pace moved at a smooth, satisfying pace. The puzzle of the Guardian, and the wit he expressed and expected in return, to maintain his evenness of temperament, kept everyone in the story, (and the reader) on constant alert. As cleverly-laid diabolical plans unfold, a great despair enters the expectations of the reader's heart at the end of book one! Then follows the excitement of brave new roads undertaken, with the underlying fear of damnation as a possible outcome, for a character reshaping herself. Supportive love, from several sources, and honest introspection offer redemption.
An innocent heroine who has been the pawn in hands of a master manipulator intent on revenge, learns her lessons well, and uses his own tactics to achieve her own ends. Wonderful!
Anyone who enjoys clever plots and excellent verbal exchanges will love these books of Renee Bernard's.
